Stamford Go-Karters Drive Out Of The Wilderness

LEIGH Golf Club did superbly to overcome some horrendous wet weather in the days leading up to the visit of the Manchester Alliance as their greens staff worked tirelessly to enjoy a course in excellent condition.

Stamford Golf Club has not been prominent in the prizes in the Alliance season to date but buoyed up by a trip to a go-karting experience they dominated the prize table.

Their pro Mark Smith, also celebrating nine years at his club showed his class with a top score of 39 points in the individual pro section to finish one clear of Graham Cox (Davenport), Adam Hodkinson (Chorlton), Ian Ridgway (Disley) and David Brunton (Ringway).

It was close in the battle for the pro am prizes and Swinton Park pro Dave Smith was ‘carried’ by his able partner Jimmy O’Reilly to 42 points and win a cpo from Ian Ridgway and David Bradshaw and Tim Maxwell (Knutsford) and Mobi Rawthore (Sale).

Next in on 41 were Craig Corrigan and Phil Cooney (Wigan) after a cpo from Mark Smith and his Stamford partner Regan Glaister.

Stamford made it a day to remember for the club as Danny Fox and Steve Finnan ended a long drought from the prize table as they took top spot in the am am section with a best-of-the-day 43 points to finish ahead of Ellesmere’s John Kilner and Terry O’Mara with Terry Gilbert (Altrincham) and Marcus Corfield (Hart Common) next in with 41.
