Pat becomes the First Lady in the Balfour and Houldsworth competitions

THE Balfour and Houldsworth Committee have run competitions for golfers in the Manchester area since 1897 when the organisation was founded by the Rt Hon AJ Balfour, who was the Prime Minister from 1902-1905 and Sir William Henry Houldsworth.

They have relied over the years to have volunteers running the competitions and clubs in the area letting them use their courses for their competitions.

Now the B and H has created its own history by having a lady on their committee for the first time in its 122-year history.

Pat With The Trophies

Pat Jackson, a relative newcomer to golf and a member of Worsley Golf Club is delighted to join the other volunteers in organising and running the 2019 competitions.

Pat explained her time in golf prior to taking up her new role which gives a great message to any ladies looking to try golf: "I started learning to play golf in 2009 at the Marriott Worsley Park after a ladies Taster Day - their professional David Screeton is a marvellous teacher!

"Not being a sporty person I didnít find it easy to swing the club and hit that tiny ball.

"However I stuck with the lessons for over a year and joined Worsley Golf Club in September 2010. I was encouraged by the ladies to enter a team of three competition in March 2011(new Lady Captain drive in) and we won!

"The ladies were very friendly and complimentary towards me and so I got the bug for golf. Iíve never looked back. I enjoy all aspects of golf life.

"My first golf success away from Worsley was in March 2014 at Moseley Golf Club Birmingham.

" My son-in-law Barnaby Schofield and I entered a mixed pairs comp - The Henman Salver which was a board competition open to non members (Barnaby was a member there at the time) and the top eight pairs went on to play a knockout and we won.

"Moseley is a prestigious club with a challenging parkland course and I hope to play there again sometime.

"My next success was in March 2015 when I won a singles ladies comp at The Mere Resort in which. 90 ladies entered and the prize was an all-expenses paid golfing holiday to Madeira for two plus two Galvin Green outfits.

"I started at handicap 36 and currently play off 17. I reduced to 16 in the summer but have crept up to 16.5 - Iíll work on reducing next season!

"When I joined Worsley I helped the Chairman of House particularly with social events and Iíve stayed with this throughout and we now have a small social committee.

"I joined the ladies Committee in 2012 and over the years weíve increased our ladies section to a healthy 80+ playing ladies.

I was honoured and delighted to be Lady Captain in 2016/17.

"Iíve enjoyed playing in the Bronze and Silver Shield Teams over the last few years and I have now taken on being the Team Captain for the Silver Team and Bell Cup.

"I was honoured and delighted to be asked to join the B and H committee who run four major competitions a year one, of which is a mixed pairs for the GS Lancashire Cup.

"I will get involved with promoting this comp and my intention is to fill the tee sheet which wonít be an easy task as it will be held at Stand Golf Club in July 2019!

"I hope to attend all the competitions and help on the signing in desk as well as meeting and greeting the players and host club officials on the day.
