2015 Cheshire President
John Looking Forward To A Great Year
HIS Honour John Roberts of Heswall Golf Club (pictured) is looking forward to a great year as the President of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs.
John has had a long time at Heswall beginning playing with his four handicap father at the age of 14 then joining the club at the age of 18.
John said: "As to my time in golf I am afraid that it is wholly unspectacular so far as playing is concerned since I joined Heswall – I am now 67 so I have been a member a long time and was the Captain of the club in 2002.
"My current handicap is 19 and my lowest was 14- this came about following a rather extraordinary round of golf in 2003.
"It was a Stableford competition on the
shorter winter course and I holed out on every hole going round in 74
gross off a handicap of 18 for 51 points.
"Had it been a medal my net score would have been 56.
"I won the competition by a mile and was immediately pulled for four shots.
"Otherwise my high points would have been winning division B in a medal back in the 1980’s and with a partner winning the Summer fourball knock out in 1996 – and that’s it!!
I joined the Cheshire County Executive Committe in 2004 and served for five years until 2008 when I resigned not having the time to devote to it. I was re-elected in 2013 and became deputy President in 2014.
Professionally I was called to the bar by Middle Temple in 1970 and practised as a barrister on the Northern Circuit until 1993 when I became a Circuit Judge and I retired from the bench at the end of 2012.
"It is a great honour to serve CUGC as their President along with a great committee and I would advise all members of our affiliated clubs to log on to the county website – www.cheshiregolf.org.uk.
"It is both the source of information about and the means of access to the resources of the CUGC and within the site you can find extensive current and historic information and records concerning County Golf in Cheshire, together with links to our Affiliated Clubs, County and National Partners.
"It also provides details of all of our fixtures for 2015 and enables you to gain direct access to our Championship Programme and submit entries to individual events on line.
"There also details about the Cheshire Card and the EG Members Benefit Package for which it is well worthwhile taking just a few minutes to register on.
"Finally on behalf of all of us at CUGC I wish you all a most successful and enjoyable golfing year."
