City Glass menís Foursomes Final at Helsby Golf Club

Another late drama sees Blackley home

HELSBY Golf Club were excellent hosts as they staged their first-ever Manchester Alliance final.

Last year they won the City Glass Foursomes and in Alliance tradition as holders of the trophy they host the final in the following year.

The club and course set up a great stage for two excellent teams representing Blackley and Denton and Denton got off to a flying start as they won the first two matches with Damien Travers and Mark Hart winning by two up and Gary Boott and Len Walker by 3-1.

But Blackley stormed back to take the lead with wins for Garry and David Baldwin by 2/1, Craig Roberts and Billy Radcliffe3/2 and Alex Hughes and Elliott Morgan by 4/2 to set up dramatic finish.

Victory for Blackley was secured by last pair Dan Williams and Matthew Atherton by 4/3 over Leon Hewson and Steve Warrender and the other match was conceded by Blackley to Mike Gill and Sam Higginbottom for a 4/3 margin of victory.

Blackley team captain Mark Hughes said: "Blackley have enjoyed a long journey to the final whih began by beating the holders Helsby on their own course in the preliminary round.

"Following a tough away win at Disley we beat Davyhulme Park and Oldham at home and the quarter-final was at Dunham Forest followed by a tremendous challenge at Bramall Park in the semi-finals.

"If you factor in practice rounds the total distance covered by each team member is exactly 600 miles- now thatís what you call Manchester and District!.

"Then factor in the number of players/reserves/supporters we have done more than 10,000 miles.

"The total number of players we used was 27 with an age range of 19-69."
