Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes Final

Links clinch their second win in top competition

THE Archie Preston Trophy, a team competition for Mixed Foursomes has been one of the Manchester Alliance’s top competitions since it began in 1991 under the original sponsorship and support of Alliance legend Archie Preston.

This season saw 92 clubs in the mix trying to reach finals day at Shaw Hill Golf Club – the winners of the competition in 2017 who traditionally host the competition as winners.

They were beaten in the earlier rounds by Bolton Old Links GC who went on to the final to meet Hindley Hall, who have reached the finals previously without winning the coveted trophy.

Old Links won the trophy in 2008 and they recovered well after losing the first game out to Hindley Hall Captain Paul Cottenden and Lady Captain Linda Bailey.

Then Old Links took control in some close matches with wins from Chris Bainbridge and Carol Helme, 4/2, Nick Jackson and Sue Hazlitt two up and Mick Wallace and Marie Millar 2/1.

Victory was confirmed with a 5/4 win for Martin Jones and Claire Kennedy over Graham Bailey and Elaine Dawber.

The trophies were presented to the team by Alliance Vice President Ian Brooks who also presented an engraved plate to Shaw Hill Captain Gerald Swarbrick in appreciation of the club’s excellent hosting of the event backed by a great course and superb weather.

The Captains of both clubs added their appreciation of a superbly organised competition at a terrific venue.
