Dunham Forest Trophy

Leigh Are Unstoppable

LEIGH Golf Club continued their recent domination of the Manchester Alliance’s top Inter Club knock out competition as they retained the Dunham Forest Trophy in emphatic style at the traditional finals day at Dunham Forest Golf Club.

The day of superb weather and a fantastic course provided a good hand of supporters from the four finals day teams with plenty of top golf from some of the top players in the region.

Leigh set a new record of five wins of the trophy in 2015 and got through again to finals day despite having been drawn away in all of the matches leading to Dunham Forest where they took on Fairfield in the morning semi-finals.

Fairfield gave a good account of themselves in some close matches but Leigh came through with a 5-2 win with the Fairfield points coming from Leigh Murray and Daniel Heathcote.

The other semi-final was a closer affair with Rossendale taking out Dukinfield by 4.5-2.5 with the Dukinfield points coming from Colin Kenworthy, Martin O’Keefe and professional David Green.

Leigh showed their class in the final as they dominated the games and wins from Stuart Harrison by 5/4 over Iain Hackett, Stuart Tinsley two up against Chris Nicholls, Andy Collier 4/3 over Dan Redding and Chris Harrison by 2/1 over Danny Leigh put them in an unassailable position.

Callum Blinkhorn added a 4/2 win over Sean Doherty and Leigh’s Dan Crook and pro Andrew Baguley conceded their matches with Ashley Siddle and Steve Nicholls to see Leigh cross the line at 5-2 to take their impressive total of Dunham Forest wins to six with five coming in the last seven years.

Alliance President John Dowd congratulated all four teams in reaching finals day from an original entry of over 90 teams and all of the club representatives thanked the Dunham Forest club for their superb hosting and the Alliance officials for their excellent organisation of the biggest Inter Club competition of its kind in the country.
