WGTB Days Out at Marple

Sponsored by Stan Laing of Glossop Caravans

Marple Provide Great Stage For Thrilling Contest

DESPITE some very wet weather in the previous week the Marple course was in great shape and enjoyed by all players both on and off their scenic and challenging course.

The sponsor was Stan Laing of Glossop Caravans who has been a great long-time sponsor of the Days Out and he had a good supporting cast on the day.

It was very tight at the top of the leader board with the early pace being set by Geoff Garnett and his excellent partner Vinny Doyle (Leigh GC) - the winner of the Manchester Alliance Amateur Order of Merit title.

They posted 44 points but this was matched by last yearís Days Out champions Tony Gregory (Stockport) and Charles Beadle (Bramhall) and their playing partners Ged Wilkinson and Ken Sutton (Vicars Cross) with the cpo going in favour of Tony and Charles from Ged and Ken.

Just a point off the pace were Terry and Nigel Chaplin (Abergele and Old Colwyn) who edged out North Manchesterís Joe Brennan and Paul Booth.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Craig Armstrong and Ian Hornsby and 24 balls for Twos were shared by David Helm and Geoff Hammond with a remarkable chip in from a ditch-edge on the 228-yard 15th.

The Shortest Drive Trophy was won by former Manchester Alliance Captain Tony Smith (Stamford) who arrived on the first tee wearing his normal shoes and after a quick dash back to his car rushed on to the first tee to hit a high shank some 80 yards into a copse of trees!

Tong Gregory, the Captain elect of the Manchester Captains, completed a good day by winning the free raffle.

It is now time to decide the qualifiers for the main prizes on the final day for the Qualifiers title and the Mike Brennan Trophy for the Best Aggregate scores and these will be displayed on the website as soon as players confirm their playing intentions for Ashton-under-Lyne.
