Family Duo Set An Early Pace

THE opening fixture of the WGTB Mens Days Out, with a revised format, saw a good field enjoy the challenges of Ashton-under-Lyne Golf Club, who as usual were great hosts with plenty of live entertainment, in some trying weather conditions that made high scoring very difficult.

Alan Lawrence of Walmersley Golf Club has been a stalwart supporter of WGTB competitions for many years with a reasonable amount of success but never with a first place.

Alan brought his five handicap son Nathan for his Days Out debut and they formed an unstoppable combination posting 43 points to lead in from the old firms of Charles Beadle and Tony Gregory 41, Ken Ashford and Steve Rayer 40 and Tam Donnelly and Mark Hughes 39.

Winners Nathan and Alan Lawrence

Also securing the other qualifying slot for the ‘Race to Haydock Park’ final were Geoff Garnett and cricket legend Roger Arnoll with 38.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Tony Gregory on the seventh hole in two shots and Cheadle’s Nigel Day with the first shot to land on the 18th green and stay as nearest to the pin for the rest of the day.

There were only two Twos from Mike Roscoe and Stephen Taylor who each won 12 balls.

Nigel Chaplin won the Free Raffle drawn by Steve McDermott and the Shortest Drive Trophy and prizes were taken by Geoff Hammond to the delight of his playing partners.
