Withington Captains For 2018

Martin Is Up For The Job

MARTIN Keates (pictured) has been one of Withington Golf Club’s top players since he joined the club 25 years ago.

The retired solicitor had a best handicap of one, now three, and he has been a key member of their teams and a frequent winner of ‘major’ competitions.

His own personal golfing highlight was to finish sixth in the Cheshire Championships at Royal Liverpool GC in 2005 and his favourite course, other than Withington, is Sage Valley in South Carolina.

Martin said: "My favourite hole at Withington is the 14th because it requires a long, straight drive and a good iron shot into an inviting green where the right selection of club is required and it is the best hole on the course.

"I currently play three times a week but I can see that increasing during my year as Captain and my other hobbies are gym and yoga and supporting Stoke City.
"My chosen charity for the year is ‘Back on Track’ which is a charity that supports people who have fallen on the wrong side of the track but who have decided that they want to become contributing members of society.

"If I could choose three players to join me in a four-ball they would be Ben Hogan – to watch the best swing ever in action, Seve Ballesteros – the most charismatic golfer ever and Bob Ling- the ex-professional at Withington – because I know he would have loved playing with the other two as much as me.

"Withington is very welcoming club and has some great deals for members with a course in superb condition."

Carol Ready For Second Term

CAROL Southern has enjoyed being a member of Withington Golf Club for 27 years and is now enjoying her second term as Lady Captain.

She was previously in the role over ten years ago and keeping it in the family her husband Dave was Captain a few years ago.

Having recently retired from Nat West Bank after 40 years Carol is enjoying her free time and looking to spend more time playing golf.

She said: "My nest handicap was 13 and now it is 15 but I will be aiming to get it back down again as I will be playing at least twice a week.

"My favourite hole at Withington is the tricky par three eighth where I had a hole in one a few years ago and one of the features is the large tree in front of the green which is difficult to negotiate.

"My favourite course, other than Withington is Pinheiros Altos in the Algarve which has a lovely setting and a great par three island hole.

"My hobby other than golf is skiing and I also support Manchester United and my golfing highlight was to win Lady Captain’s Day in 2017.

"My chosen players to join in a four-ball would be Henrik Stenson, a great golfer and personality, Annika Sorenstam, again a great golfer and for what she has done for ladies golf and finally Jordan Spieth to get some tips from.

"At Withington Golf Club we are committed to making the club fully inclusive, integrating men and ladies into golf and making it a welcoming place for both new and existing members to enjoy."
